How Do Your Writing Exercises Work? Essentially, I go to a “Single Word Prompt Generator” and have it throw a random word at me. Then I go to Unsplash.com and use that word to search their database of images, and scroll through for something that catches my attention. This may be something where I simply want to describe what’s in the image, or maybe it sparks a small story nugget in my brain. Regardless, I then take the picture and post it here, with credit, and proceed to write for 15 minutes. Whatever I produce, I share with you lovely people. Unedited. Typos are to be expected. Word Prompt: Fire “You seem troubled?” Asher grinned, and turned dark eyes on the spirit woman, “I’m thinking.” “Ah, so I was right,” Aliah muttered, stomping up to his side, leaning heavily against her staff. “Come, we shall ask the spirits for guidance.” “Aliah, it’s not that important-” “If it weighs on your mind so heavily, you did not hear this old woman approach, then it is important enough to ask for aid,” she corrected simply, hooking her gnarled fingers, joints swollen with age, around his arm. She tugged him back through the village, ignoring his grumbling and slowly guiding him towards the spirit fire in the centre. It was a sign for the spirits, so that they would know they were welcome in the village, and was never allowed to burn out, and as they approached the flame attendants turned to bow for the spirit woman. Aliah brushed them aside, and the pair quickly left while Asher sighed once more. “This really isn’t necessary...” he trailed off at the sharp look the spirit woman locked on him, before shrugging. “Fine, go on then,” he grumbled and Aliah nodded. “What plagues your thoughts?” she asked simply, and Asher hesitated once more. Slowly though he let his gaze settle on the flames and sighed, “I... fear... I do not know what my path should be-” Shocking him, Aliah slammed her hand into the depths of the burning wood, sending sparks flying high and out of the tendrils emerged a stag of pure flame. “The stag, protector of the woods and forest. That is your path, Asher. You are warrior, fighter, but more importantly, you are protector. What you choose to protect, however, is entirely up to you,” Aliah said, a note of warning in her voice as the fire-stag pranced around the spirit fire before coming to a stop at Asher’s side. Nudging his shoulder with its nose, Asher slowly raised his hand and let it settle against the creature's flank. Made of flame, and radiating heat, but the creature didn’t burn him. Instead, it tossed it’s antlers and scattered into embers, sparks floating away on the wind and yet, somehow, Asher knew the spirit would always be by his side in the darkest moments of his life. #Writing #Original #Writing Exercise #Ari Writes #Arista Writes
